Software Engineer – Power Systems Analytics
About Firma Power
Firma Power assembles portfolios of wind, solar, storage, demand response and VPPs—plus complementary and emerging assets—to deliver clean, firm, load-enabling power to hyperscale data centers and other large loads.
We originate and negotiate PPAs, acquire projects, ensure transmission deliverability, sleeve firm capacity and energy through utilities, manage market participation for assets in our portfolio, and provide performance guarantees on certain elements of our portfolio.
Our competitive edge comes from world-class analytics — optimization engines, resource screening, and deliverability modeling that unlock new customer pathways. FirmaOS, developed in one of the world’s leading academic laboratories, enables Firma to identify projects that are uniquely valuable as part of our portfolio strategy.
The Role
We are seeking a Software Developer – Analytics Systems to join Firma’s core analytics team. You’ll report to the President and work closely with the Chief Analytics Officer and Manager (or Director) of Analytics to design, build, and maintain Firma’s proprietary analytics software stack — FirmaOS — and meet internal and customer-drive software product needs. FirmaOS is the software backbone of a new generation of firm, clean electricity supply. You’ll help develop the analytical and digital infrastructure that underpins Firma’s commercial edge, including tools for project prospecting, deliverability, capacity performance, and long-term electricity system modeling. Your work will directly shape how new clean-energy projects are discovered, evaluated, and integrated into the grid—accelerating decarbonization at scale.
Key Responsibilities
Develop Core Analytics Software
Develop repeatable, scalable workflows around core analytics tasks, including site prospecting, portfolio optimization, economic modeling, risk analysis, and transmission deliverability assessment.
Integrate diverse data sources (market information, weather data, geospatial information, transmission power flow cases) into effective data pipelines for secure, scalable analytics.
Build effective visualizations for core analytics outputs.
Contribute to software architecture decisions and roadmap prioritization in collaboration with the analytics leadership team.
Own Best Practices in Software Development
Develop well-documented, maintainable, and computationally efficient Python- and Julia-based software modules.
Design APIs and user interfaces to make analytics accessible across the organization and, under license, to external clients.
Establish scalable, secure cloud-based environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure) for data management, testing, and production.
Implement best practices for testing, version control, and continuous integration/deployment.
Ensure interoperability and performance of all analytic modules within FirmaOS.
AI-Accelerated Analytics
Develop and deploy agentic AI workflows that accelerate analytics — automating data ingestion, modeling, and interpretation.
Experiment with LLM-based agents and workflow orchestration to enhance the productivity of the analytics team.
Effective Collaboration & Documentation
Work collaboratively with analysts, data scientists, and commercial teams to refine requirements; to test, document and deploy core software components; and to advance commercial goals.
Produce clear technical documentation and contribute to user-facing guides and training.
Proactively identify bottlenecks and propose improvements to analytics workflows and data infrastructure.
Success in 6 Months Looks Like
A working prototype of repeatable portfolio identification and optimization workflow deployed internally with clear documentation and user feedback integrated.
Establishment of a secure, cloud-based data management and computing platform.
Implementation of an effective data pipeline to compile data sources for core analytics tasks.
Substantive contribution to Firma’s software development roadmap.
Success in 12 Months Looks Like
A stable, well-documented FirmaOS codebase deployed internally supporting multiple analytics workflows.
A production-grade tool for automated portfolio identification and optimization deployed internally and accessible to commercial staff and licensed customers with an intuitive user interface.
Operational AI workflows that automate at least one major analytical process.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Applied Math, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
3+ years of experience in scientific or data-intensive software development.
Experience building APIs, data pipelines, and secure cloud-based analytics and data management systems (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
Proficiency in Python and/or Julia.
Familiarity with modern front-end frameworks (e.g., React, Plotly Dash, or Streamlit) for visualization and internal tool interfaces is desirable.
Familiarity with agentic AI, LLM-based workflows, or AI automation frameworks (LangChain, CrewAI, OpenDevin, etc.) is a strong plus.
Understanding of power systems modeling, renewables analytics, energy market simulation, and/or optimization methods is highly desirable.
Comfort working in a fast-paced start-up environment and taking ownership of mission-critical tasks.
Excellent collaborative instincts, attention to software reliability, and curiosity about real-world energy systems.
Compensation & Benefits
Base Salary: Competitive with early-stage energy software companies; commensurate with experience.
Annual Cash Bonus: 10-15% of base (contingent on company & individual performance)
Equity: Meaningful ownership opportunity in Firma Power.
Benefits: Competitive package to be developed upon funding, including health, retirement, and paid leave.
Location: Flexible (remote-friendly) with preference for periodic co-location with the core team.
EEO Statement
We’re an equal-opportunity employer. We value diverse perspectives, non-traditional backgrounds, and curiosity-driven problem solvers.
