About Firma Power
Firma Power is building out our unique, tech-enabled platform for delivering load-enabling clean firm power at scale—aggregating and optimizing portfolios of renewable, storage, and firming assets to deliver reliable, carbon-free capacity to hyperscale data centers and other large loads.
Our proprietary software, FirmaOS, integrates advanced optimization, power flow analysis, and data-driven project screening to design least-cost, fully deliverable clean-firm portfolios.
The Role
We are seeking a Transmission Modeling Software Engineer to join our growing Software and Decision Systems team. The ideal candidate has experience with power system modeling, transmission analysis, and interconnection and power flow studies, and is excited to apply those skills in a modern, software-driven environment. Further, the ideal candidate can contribute to Firma’s production software codebase across transmission and, as applicable, other energy system domains.
You will work closely with the software, project development, and commercial teams to automate FirmaOS’s transmission modeling capabilities - integrating CEII data, representing deliverability constraints, and advancing our understanding of where and how new clean capacity can connect to the grid.
This role sits at the intersection of traditional transmission modeling and modern software engineering, offering a rare opportunity to build next-generation planning tools for the clean energy transition.
Responsibilities
Conduct and interpret AC and DC power flow analyses, contingency studies, and deliverability assessments using industry-standard tools such as PSSE, PSLF, TARA, or other relevant tools.
Integrate and validate transmission system data and network models (e.g., bus/branch, substation, CEII-classified datasets) into the FirmaOS platform, conforming to established security and data governance protocols
Collaborate with software engineers to translate power system models into interpretable datasets and intuitive visualization layers that deliver actionable insights within FirmaOS..
Develop and apply reproducible and computationally tractable methods for analyzing and communicating network constraints, interconnection feasibility, and congestion risk.
Collaborate closely with the software team to develop the FirmaOS codebase – participating in code reviews, sharing and documenting knowledge, and delivering well-tested production-ready code.
Engage with utilities, RTO/ISO planning data, and interconnection queues to maintain up-to-date system representations.
Contribute to the broader FirmaOS product roadmap by advising on model accuracy, data validation, and engineering realism.
Qualifications
Required:
2–6 years of experience in transmission planning, grid modeling, or power systems engineering, ideally within an ISO/RTO, utility, or consulting environment.
Direct experience using power flow modeling tools such as PSSE, PSLF, TARA, or other similar tools for load flow, contingency, or transfer capability analysis.
Strong understanding of grid topology, contingency analysis, N-1 reliability, deliverability, and interconnection processes.
Ability to analyze large system models and synthesize insights relevant to project siting and portfolio deliverability.
Proficiency in the python and/or julia languages
Experience shipping rigorously tested production software
Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
Curiosity, diligence, adaptability, and a desire to work collaboratively
Nice-to-have:
Experience working with CEII (Critical Energy Infrastructure Information) or similar protected datasets.
Experience managing workflow or application deployments on cloud infrastructure
Familiarity with agent-assisted software development
Exposure to web-based data visualization or mapping tools (Plotly, Deck.gl, Leaflet, Mapbox).
Experience with grid analytics, optimization models, or capacity accreditation methods (ELCC, PRM, NRIS/ERIS).
You’ll Thrive Here If You
Are excited to join at the earliest stages of company building and have a material impact on Firma’s trajectory.
Are motivated by building practical tools that accelerate clean energy deployment.
Can navigate ambiguity and enjoy working across technical and domain boundaries.
Value thoughtful engineering practices, code quality, and scientific rigor.
Want to help shape a platform that will define how the next generation of energy infrastructure is planned and built!
About the Team
You’ll join a team that combines power-systems expertise, large-scale analytics, and modern software engineering to solve one of the defining challenges of the energy transition: how to supple new, large electricity users with clean, reliable power while maintaining grid stability and affordability.
Compensation, Leveling, and Benefits
This is a Transmission Modeling Software Engineer or Sr. Transmission Modeling Software Engineer role, depending on experience and depth of modeling expertise.
Base salary: $140,000 – $170,000
Equity (Profits Interest): Meaningful ownership opportunity in Firma Power, vesting over four years with a one-year cliff
Performance bonus: up to 10–15% of base salary (contingent on company & individual performance)
Benefits: Competitive package to be developed upon Seed funding, including health, retirement, and paid leave.
Base Salary: Competitive with early-stage energy software companies; commensurate with experience.
EEO Statement
We’re an equal-opportunity employer. We value diverse perspectives, non-traditional backgrounds, and curiosity-driven problem solvers.
